Back2Basics: Building to Minimum Standards Could Flood Your Town, Offering 2
Thursday, November 14, 2024 5:00:00 PM UTC - 6:00:00 PM UTC
This is the fifth topic of 2024 in the Back2Basics Series. Each topic is covered twice, choose from either offering. This is the first offering. National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) participating communities must adopt and enforce minimum floodplain management standards, related to floodplain development in identified Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). However, building to the minimum standards of the NFIP may not be enough to prevent flooding in your community. Over time these minimum standards can result in increased risks for most communities. This is why FEMA and the NFIP advocate for communities to adopt higher stricter development standards. Now is the time to ensure that your regulations will not cause new and existing development to flood. Hear and see examples of standards above the minimum. This topic is a must see for rapidly developing communities on the urban frontier.
